Intense Competition During M & G Game
by Mike Sackley
The ASU hockey team always concludes its tryout week with the annual Maroon and Gold game. It’s the last chance for guys to show the coaching staff why they belong on the hockey team going into the September 30 season opener against the University of Arizona.
The Maroon and Gold game took place Friday night at Oceanside Arena in Tempe. The Gold team got things started with the first two goals. Both goals were scored by Taylor Chomiski out of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Chomiski was able to earn a spot on the final roster, thanks to his performance Friday night.
The Maroon team was able to strike back thanks to Patrick Rogan out of Fairbault, Minn. He and Paul Scola of Burlington, Mass. had a 2 on 1 break and Rogan finished the deal with his only goal of the game.
Dan Styrna of Vancouver, British Columbia was able to add another goal for the Gold team in the 3rd period. Schacker allowed three goals and played only half the game. The Maroon team was able to score with 14 seconds left in the game to defeat the Gold team.
So the team is set at 31 players for the start of the season. The Sun Devils will certainly have a lot of depth, which will be key in the middle of the season. It will allow head coach Greg Powers to cycle more guys in and out of the lineup, especially on weekends when ASU plays back to back games.
There is a lot of new talent on the team this year, and the expectation is that this team should be just as good or even better than last year’s squad. There were a lot of big games last year where the Sun Devils just didn’t have enough gas in the tank to hold on for the victory. This year, winning those types of games against the good teams is well within the Sun Devils reach.
