#1 LINDENWOOD UNIVERSITY (M1) 4, #8 ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY (M1) 1

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Tempe, Ariz. (1/22/10) – After a terrible showing on Wednesday night against Davenport, the eighth-ranked Arizona State University Sun Devils looked to bounce back in front of their fans at Oceanside Ice Arena. However, they were facing the defending Division 1 National Champions and top-ranked team in the league this year, the Lindenwood University Lions. While the Sun Devils’ defensive effort improved from the previous game, their offense remained silent as they fell to the Lions, 4-1.

The defensive effort by the Sun Devils was much better in this game as they tried to avoid another blowout loss. While Lindenwood kept the puck in Arizona State’s zone for most of the night, there was no score until late in the first period. Cory Spradling took a shot that went in the net past goaltender Mark Schacker then quickly back out. There was a slight delay in the call but Lindenwood was up 1-0

In the second period, the Sun Devils still could not manufacture any offense against the Lions as they failed to get quality opportunities on net. Midway through the frame, Adam Krefski scored to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. Arizona State had a golden chance late in the period as they had a two-man power play when Lions goaltender Robi Cavallari received a delay of game penalty for dislodging the net during a Sun Devils’ scoring chance. Lindenwood’s aggressive penalty killing prevented the Sun Devils from doing anything on the man advantage and it remained 2-0 after two periods.

The Lions stepped up the offensive pressure in the third as they looked to finish off the Sun Devils. Cory Spradling would get his second goal of the game to make it 3-0 for the Lions just past the halfway point of the stanza. Arizona State finally showed a bit of life offensively as Lee Stone would break the scoreless drought with a power play goal to shrink the deficit to two. Although the Sun Devils showed some confidence after the goal, time was still their enemy. With just more than two minutes left in regulation, Adam Krefski would get his second tally of the night to seal the win for the defending champions. Arizona State will attempt to end the week on a positive note Saturday night against Lindenwood in Tempe.
